The White Nile Organic Coffee project started in 1998 in an effort to harness the potential of the region by promoting the cultivation of Arabica coffee by training farmers in agricultural techniques and best practices.
In 2003 the project received its very first Organic certificate, an accomplishment that has, over the years, attracted UTZ and Rainforest Alliance certification schemes.
The White Nile project gains its name from the famous Murchison Falls which lie only a few kilometers away. It is here that the mighty River Nile squeezes itself into a 7-meter volcanic rock stretch, forming white foam as it proceeds, hence turning into a ‘White’ Nile as it pours into Lake Albert.
Kawacom has heavily encouraged local activities and has distributed approximately 150,000 coffee seedlings annually to its partner farmers and has distributed varieties (including SL14) that are well-suited to the climate of the region to produce high quality coffee. During the harvest season, Kawacom encourages farmers to deliver cherry to their state-of-the-art mill.
After the cherries are collected the pulping process (peeling) takes place in a central mill. The peeling and drying processes are completed in the mill and then coffees are sorted from any impurities. Afterwards the cherries are sent to the export center, where they start their journey to The Roasting House, so we can provide our customers with a perfect cup of coffee.
