Arabica was first cultivated in Benir Meriah, Gayo Highlands, in 1908, just over 200 years after coffee first entered Indonesia thru the Dutch Colonization.
Our visit in 2015 with the Specialty Coffee Association of Europe was when we first genuinely started to unravel some of the secrets of this stunning island and wonderful farms, through being welcomed as guests to the governors of each of the departments starting from the Capital Banda Aceh in the North, making our way down to Takengon, and finishing off at Gayo Highlands which overlook the truly magical Laut Tawar lake.
Kopi Gayo became a registered copyright to the Gayo Highlands region only, which means this wonderful type can only be grown in this region, which spans altitudes of up to 1700 meters above sea level (MASL).
Coffee from Benir Meria is unique because of its present body & flavor, thanks to the local processing method known as Wet Hulling or “Gilling Basah”. First, coffee cherry is removed, and the beans are left to ferment in their honey layer for up to 36 hours, which allows them to retain some cherry sweetness. Then, the beans are washed and partially dried, before being wet hulled from their protective layer and sundried, this gives the coffee a depth in its body and the green beans their unique colour, which turns almost blue (hence the nick-name Blue Gayo).
